Finding Meaning in the Vastness of Existence

.

"There is a great and glorious purpose in the march of the universes through space. All of your mortal struggling is not in vain. We are all part of an immense plan, a gigantic enterprise, and it is the vastness of the undertaking that renders it impossible to see very much of it at any one time and during any one life." 32:5.1 (364.3)

This offers a profound message of hope and perspective. It begins by affirming that the universe is not random or meaningless, but rather guided by a “great and glorious purpose.” This purpose encompasses not only the grand movements of galaxies and cosmic events but also the individual experiences and struggles of each person.

It directly addresses the feelings of futility or insignificance that can arise from life’s hardships. By stating, “All of your mortal struggling is not in vain,” it reassures us that every challenge, effort, and moment of growth is meaningful within the context of a larger, divine plan. Our lives, with all their joys and sorrows, are woven into the fabric of an “immense plan, a gigantic enterprise” that far exceeds our immediate understanding. This perspective invites us to trust that our contributions, no matter how small they may seem, have value and purpose in the unfolding story of the universe.

Finally, it acknowledges the limitations of our perspective: “it is the vastness of the undertaking that renders it impossible to see very much of it at any one time and during any one life.” Just as a single puzzle piece cannot reveal the entire picture, our individual lives cannot grasp the full scope of cosmic purpose. Yet, this limitation is not a cause for despair, but for humility and wonder. It encourages us to live with faith, curiosity, and perseverance, confident that we are meaningful participants in a magnificent and ongoing creation.
